  • OUR FRATERNITY HISTORY

OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY, INC. HISTORY

The founders were three undergraduates -- Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman.

Joining them was their faculty adviser, Ernest Everett Just.

From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, "friendship is essential to the soul", the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto.

    FULL OMEGA HISTORY

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college. On the evening of November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi was birthed inside the science building (later renamed Thirkield Hall) at Howard University located in Washington, D.C.

    ALPHA RHO CHAPTER HISTORY

    ALPHA RHO WEB PAGE

Sacramento, CA's first Omega Psi Phi chapter (Alpha Rho) was chartered in 1962.

Alpha Rho went inactive for some years until 1978 and then ran strong until 1983. These brothers were initiated into the chapter representing Sacramento State University and the University of California, Davis.

In an effort to abolish intermediate chapters, Alpha Rho was deactivated as a chapter in 1983. However, the brothers of Alpha Rho continued to grow their membership and initiated another group of men that same year- thus Iota Mu (at Sacramento State and UC Davis) was chartered as an undergraduate chapter.

In 1994, brothers Barry Campbell, Fred Alexander, Richard Farnell, Keir Abrams, and Torey Lovett joined together in re-activating Alpha Rho. Recognizing that there were many brothers in the Bay Area who were not active with any chapters locally, these brothers showed perseverance and crossed many hurdles in order to finally reactivate Alpha Rho as a graduate chapter charted in Berkeley, CA (1997) under the leadership of Brother Ricky Lewis who was the District Representative at that time.
